BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Describing the remarkable success of BJ's Beer Pong's market-leading beer pong table design -- "portable, beer-proof, sun resistant" -- and its plans for international markets, the Journal offers several examples of the game's sustained popularity and its spread from college campuses to a much broader nationwide young-adult leisure market.
Three years ago, two brothers, Jesse, 23, and Ben Spiegel, 21, were driving back to college when they conceived of a beer pong table business that would capitalize on the college beer pong craze.
Beer pong players themselves, they saw the potential of the beer pong business. They decided to make portable, fold-up beer pong tables that would have slick, glossy finishes like snowboards. They knew the tables had to be very durable and cheap. Students were used to playing on dormitory doors that they would take off their hinges. The ones the Spiegels wanted to make would fold up and store in a closet or under a bed. So they had the idea; now they had to figure out how to make it happen.
Jesse left school and took off for China. Knowing little about China and not a word of Chinese, he felt like he had been dropped into another universe. It took him seven months on his first trip, but when he returned, he had made a lasting relationship with a manufacturer, and more importantly, a Chinese partner who now makes sure that quality and prices hold up even if neither brother is there to oversee production.
Meanwhile, back in the United States, Ben was busy developing the infrastructure and logistical framework to enable the business to function and Suzanne, their sister, was the marketing maven to get the company launched.
It took two years to get it all together, but it was worth the time and effort. BJ's Beer Pong is a rapidly growing business. The combination of a reliable partner abroad with foreign manufacturing, internet sales, and a popular drinking game have proven a formidable formula.
